Also, 'turning up' the radio volume is also turning down the resistance, 
although we usually say 'turn it up.'  Electronil marvels!  
I wonder if there's a term for those opposites you very rightly pointed out?  
"little big" and "pretty ugly" seem perfectly natural to say, but the meanings 
clash, in a way.  
How about "a lot of nothing" or "big nothing" or even "big bunches of nothing"?
