Well Folks it is Independence Day weekend in Mayberry and the town is all ready
to celebrate. The parade is about ready to proceed down Main Street. Leading
the way of course will be the Mayberry Band playing Stars and Stripes. They
will be followed by the Mayberry squad car driven by Deputy Sheriff Barney
Fife. Next comes Miss Mayberry riding in an open convertible wearing a stars
and stripes bathing suit with lit sparklers in her hair. Following Miss
Mayberry comes Ernest T. Bass who reaches into his pouch and starts throwing
rock candy to the kids along the parade route. Only fitting, the Darling
Family follows in their truck with the boys singing Dooley. A short distance
behind the Darlings comes old Regis carrying a sign protesting the gold
standard. Now no parade would be complete without the politicians, so next
comes Mayberry's own fat little mayor, Mayor Pike along with his daughter
Juanita. Orville Monroe comes next with his shiny black hearse loaded up with
all the old dead batteries he has collected around town. Walker's drugstore
comes next with Miss Ellie riding in a convertible with a big container of ice
cream in one hand and a bottle of root beer in the other. She is of course is
"The Root Beer Float". The woman's church group is next riding on a hay wagon
pulled by Jeff Pruitt on his tractor. Aunt Bea is at the piano singing "Toot
Toot Tootsie Goodbye" while the other ladies are singing along and banging on
dishpans. Old Hutch and Jimmy the Goat are following the church ladies and
they are followed by Otis Campbell riding a cow. Right behind Otis comes
Skippy and Daphne in their sporty old convertible. Goober is next with his old
truck and in the back are a bunch of Mayberry kids all who have their bare feet
sticking up in the air. On the door is a sign that says "Goober's Toe Truck".
The final entry in the parade comes into view and it is Floyd Lawson and Mr.
Foley sitting in rocking chairs shaking hands. A sign on their vehicle says
"Mayberry, the Friendly Town".

Oh what a sight it was to behold. The parade lasted over 15 minutes. But the
day has just begun in Mayberry. After the parade everyone will be heading to
the town picnic. At three o'clock Mayor Pike will make a speech and Goober and
Gomer will be shooting off the old cannon. After dark the day's events will
conclude with a gigantic fireworks display out at Meyer's Lake. Barney is in
charge of the fireworks. I have a feeling that is when the excitement will
really begin.
