I've always loved the game of baseball. Unfortunately. I was never any good at
it. So, at the age of 15, I became a certified umpire.
Over the next 29 years I officiated many baseball and softball games, from
Little League through high school, and even some adult recreation games.
Because
of my health, sadly, I had to give it up 3 years ago.
Back in 1986, I had an Andy situation. It was the local LL championship, and
the
local directors wanted me to call the game. Unfortunately, my nephew was
playing. I refused all week until, finally, I gave in. I agreed to work the
bases, but not the plate.
During the game, with the entire family there, there was a close play at 1st
base, and Kris was out by half a step. (His foot was in the air when the 1st
baseman caught the throw) I have caught so much grief over the years, and Kris
still insists, to this day, 25 years later, that he was safe.
My story doesn't end there, however. Over the years, when telling of the many
instances I have witnessed during games, that one always comes up. A couple of
years ago, my ex, spoke up and said "Don't you remember? Kris's mother had
taken a picture showing he was safe."
I had to convince her that there never was a picture and that she had confused,
in her mind, what had happened with an episode of TAGS.
