Okay, I'll take the challenge. I didn't look it up, and this is just a guess, but could it have been Stuart Erwin? He played Tom Silby, whose name was shown on a tombstone (put there by his proud wife Annabelle who couldn't admit that he had left her and instead pretended that he died). That was in "Opie's Charity" from the first season. I know Stuart was in a number of movies in the thirties.
