There is something I have pondered for a long time and I cannot remember if we
ever discussed it. Something that always seemed so out of character with the
Taylor household and Mayberry in general is that in the episode "High Noon in
Mayberry" we learn that Andy keeps a revolver on top of Aunt Bee's dining room
hutch. He also kept the bullets close by. Andy had always made it known that
he never felt the need to carry a gun in Mayberry because there was no need and
he wanted the people to respect him and not fear him because he wore a gun. So
why would he feel he needed to keep a gun in the dining room of his own home
when he felt there was no need to ever lock the doors? I have also wondered
whether Aunt Bee and Opie would have known the gun was there. Certainly they
would have come across the bullets when they were kept in the hutch drawer.
(not hutch door). At one time I thought perhaps Andy put the gun there after
finding out that the ex con was coming to visit him. This is the only scenario
that makes sense to me. But then Andy had no idea he would come to the house
until he called him, and at that time the gun was already there. If anyone has
any insight on this I would enjoy hearing it.
