>>>Something that always seemed so out of character with the Taylor household >>>and Mayberry in general is that in the episode "High Noon in Mayberry" we >>>learn that Andy keeps a revolver on top of Aunt Bee's dining room hutch.<<<
Ken, it's been awhile since I watched that episode, so I don't recall if there was any indication as to whether Andy routinely kept the revolver on the hutch or if he put it there for that situation. But I don't really find him having a gun at home out of character for Andy. After all, he was the sheriff. Yes, he didn't normally carry a gun because, as you said, he wanted the townsfolk to respect him for himself, not for the gun. But Andy was also a practical man and a realist. He knew there were times when a gun was necessary, and he used one when it was called for. He didn't want to assume that Luke Comstock was coming back to seek revenge, but he also was wise enough to be prepared for the worst. That's my take on it, anyway.
