October 3, 1960, I had just turned 14 years old.

Things I really miss from my childhood growing up in a small town in the late
50's.

Cartoons before the main feature at the movies.
The sound of pop bottles being opened on the pop machine.
The smell of burning leaves in the fall.
Slow walks to and from school with my best friend.
Drinking real chocolate malted milks from the paper cone containers.
Listening to Letters to Santa Claus on the radio on Christmas Eve.
Playing baseball with no adults around telling us what to do.
Fishing for chubs and bullheads at the old mill pond.
Buying licorice pipes and waxed lips at the grocery store.
Going trick for treating with my friends on dark Halloween nights.
Hearing the national anthem being played when TV went off the air at night.
Playing around the train depot and watching the bums come out of the boxcars.
Playing marbles and mumbly peg during recess at school.
Dancing slow dances in the school gym during noon hours.
Watching movies outside on the feed store wall on Friday nights.
Stopping at the drug store after school for a nickel coke or ice cream cone.
Running down to the car dealerships to see the new cars come in each fall. (
probably three cars at the most)
Catching fire flies with my friends in the neighbor's hay field.
Spending as much time outside as possible before having to go to bed.
Knowing every kid in town and knowing that they all new me.
