It has been very quiet in Mayberry the last few days so I hope you will
bear with me if I digress somewhat today. First of all, my wife and I had
another fantastic Mayberry night at a Burger King Car Show here in Eau
Claire. So many folks with young kids spent a lot of time looking at the
squad car and explaining what it was all about. It was such fun to watch
all the little kids walking around with their Mayberry sticker badges
attached to their shirts.
Even more enjoyable was watching the teens talk about the car and ask
questions about it.

On Father's Day we are returning to my small hometown to take part in their
annual parade. This year it will be especially wonderful. Because of one
of my Mayberry presentations in another part of the state last year, I was
able to reconnect personally with an old childhood friend whom I had not
seen in over 45 years. We now make contact every few days. He has three
young relatives who live here in Eau Claire and we are making arrangements
for the girls to come to the parade and ride in the squad car. My friend
has agreed to dress up as an old moonshiner and walk with me in the parade.
He will be carrying my old moonshine jug and I will be attempting to
arrest him. He is a real fun guy so it should be great.

It is especially meaningful as it is on Father's Day. I basically grew up
without a father and then fate had it that I would not become a father, so
I have never in my life experienced any real father/son activities. I think
that is one reason why I latched onto TAGS at an early age. I recall
thinking back then how great it would be to have a dad like Andy, but it
wasn't meant to be. And then as I got older I imagined that I would be a
dad like Andy to my son, but that too was not meant to be. So maybe on
this special Father's Day I will be able to be a father figure to three
young girls if for only a few hours. But better yet I have rekindled a
special friendship that meant so much to me 50 years ago, and to think that
good old Butch and I will once again be walking the streets of Dorchester
together just as we did all those many years ago.
Dorchester may never be the same again.
