Barney took judo classes, not karate lessons. He did, however, once attempt to learn karate from a book entitled "Karate: The Art of Unarmed Self-Defense" in The County Nurse.
Trained noticers may have noticed that the same book turned up later in the epilogue of Barney's Uniform, with the dust cover altered (the word "karate" had been obliterated). It may have been the same book Barney was reading way back at the beginning of Andy, the Marriage Counselor, but in that episode the title on the cover was "The Art of Judo."
