I always mention a parade in the Subject line, so if you are tired of
hearing about my parades, you can simply pass over this post. But we had
just a fantastic time going back home to my small hometown to do their
annual parade. Joining me this year was a former childhood friend whom I
had not seen for 45 years until he appeared at one of my presentations. He
dressed as a moonshiner and carried one of my jugs. We also had three
adorable girls ages 7 and 9 dressed in homemade striped prison shirts with
a prison cap and they rode in the car and tossed candy. However, half way
through the parade they managed to escape from the car so I had to try to
apprehend them as well as capture my prisoner. He managed to get my gun
away from me but when he tried to shoot me he discovered it was empty. It
was then I showed him I had one bullet. I gave the gun to a bystander and
told her to keep it on my prisoner while I cuffed him. We had a great time
and got lots of laughs. I was once again able to ticket the police officer
for parking his squad car illegally. Two of my childhood next door
neighbors came up to me. I hadn't seen either of them in over 47 years so
we had a good time talking about old times. I also had a former friend
from my first two years of college come up to me and she had to remind my
wife that I had dated her sister. The only dark cloud on the day was that
my brother who lives just four miles down the road would not come to the
parade, although we were invited to his house afterwards. The same thing
happened last year. I actually think he is embarrassed by my Mayberry
passion. I also took along my high school yearbook from my senior year.
My hometown library has every year except 1964 so they happy to get mine.
Isn't it a good thing my mother didn't give it away to a disease drive? I
did post some nice pictures of the parade on my facebook page as well as on
my Website under Dorchester Days Parade.
