Hey, Paul, such conversion is really pretty easy if you have a USB VCR like I do. Mine is made by Ion and is called VCR2PC. It comes with its own software for recording and conversion. I transferred all of my extensive VHS tape collection to DVD with it. I got mine new (and quite a bargain!) on eBay, so I'm not sure if it's still available in retail stores. Maybe Allan has one of those--I don't know. You might want to look into it yourself if you have many VHS tapes you want to convert. However, I don't upload anything to You Tube, so I don't know if a special format is required for that, other than simply being a digital file.
