Ken made some interesting observations concerning the mail delivery in
Mayberry. I would guess that in Mayberry, mail is delivered more than once a
day; in Barney's Replacement, Andy mentions "the afternoon mail," which implies
that there is also "morning mail," otherwise Andy would have said "today's
mail."

Andy's mail sometimes arrives at his house, and other times it arrived at the
courthouse. Probably what happens is, if it is addressed to "Sheriff Taylor" it
goes to the courthouse, but mail addressed to "Andy Taylor" goes to his house.
Years and years ago it was not unusual for someone sending a letter to simple
write on the envelope "John Doe, Podunk, MO" and then the folks at the local
post office were expected to do the rest. These days, that would never work
because the United States government conducts business through slot machines
(computers).

As to why Barney would sometimes go to the post office to pick up the mail,
maybe the letter carrier took an occasional sick day or vacation day.
