>>>I haven't seen that for quite a while so I kind of forgot about
the scene at the dump where Andy and Barney are discussing the girlie
magazine that Barney subscribes to. It is very obvious that Andy is
enjoying looking at the centerfold as he shows it to Barney several times.
I have always wondered why the writers felt that scene should be a part of
the episode. It seems so totally unnecessary for the great story line they
had going and it was so totally out of character for Andy and Barney and it
is a far cry from Barney's 25 cent "Learn a Month" magazine. I know in one
of the very first episodes Andy mentioned that he had to quit getting a
magazine because there were girlie pictures in it and Barney had never been
married. Any thoughts or observations that anyone would care to share?<<<

I love that episode--it's so funny! But, like you, I have always found that
particular scene to be out of place in Mayberry. I know that the idea would be
lost on small children, and yet the thought of Barney subscribing to a
Playboy-type magazine just doesn't seem right. I don't think that episode is
mentioned in Mayberry 101, so we probably have no insights from the writer. I
just checked on the website and found the writer to be Richard M. Powell, and
I'm not really familiar with him. I, too, wonder why he decided to include
that. It takes away some of the innocence that is part of Barney's appeal. It
also lets some of the contemporary culture of the outside world intrude on
Mayberry, which is something they normally strove to avoid.
