>>>What changes do you think Mayberry would have gone through by 2012?<<<

David, your speculations would be right on the mark if Mayberry were a real
town. Fortunately for us, it isn't! Therefore, I would have to say--in my own
opinion, anyway--that Mayberry would be just the same in 2012. Oh, the
clothing fashions would change a little bit, and people would be driving newer
cars. But Andy and Barney would still be upholding the law, Floyd would still
be cutting hair, they'd still be changing the marquee over at the Grand
Theater, the Mayberry Security Bank would still be guarded by Asa with his
moldy bullets, Goober would still be rebuilding carburetors at Wally's, Aunt
Bee would still be making fried chicken and baking pies, and Barney and Thelma
Lou would still be watching that doctor show on TV with a pan of cashew fudge
between them. Now, it may be that Sarah wouldn't be able to operate the
switchboard anymore, but I bet she would be running the local mobile phone
store! Even that is a concession I am loathe to make. To me, Mayberry will
never succumb to the cultural, technological, and economic changes that have
transformed life in America over the last five decades because Mayberry is
timeless. As the saying amongst us fans goes, Mayberry is a state of mind.
And I refuse to see it any other way!
