Martha and I live in the town where I grew up starting in 1950.....David Quinn
I think we need to consider a few things if we are to mix fact with fiction...
1. The location of Maybverry would have to be taken in consideration...it's
proximity to large cities. I think
Andy or someone once said Raleigh was 50 miles from Mayberry
2. Access to the town by major highways would be important..
3. The citizens didn't seem to care Mayberry was smaller and less active than
Mt. Pilot, a larger city.
4. Cmparing the growth of real towns the size of Mayberry, I think Andy once
said there was a population
of 10,000.
All the above considered..discounting the desire by the older generation to
remain small I would suggest
the following :
I think the liquor ordinance would have been repealed and a couple of taverns
and/or a liquor store would now
be in Mayberry.
The Grand Theatre might still be there although now a 2 to 4 screen cinema
I think the elementary school would have been rebuilt to include a middle
school & a new high school there might
even be a small community college now.
I would suggest a strip mall possibly on RT 1..using the map from Ken Beck &
Jim Clarks book. RT 1 would now
a major by-pass around town..extending from Greensboro south to Charlottesville
North.
Wally's would probably be there but under another name...and there would be two
or three chain motels on RT 1.
along with a couple of restaurants.
The Mayberry hotel would now be an historical sight... and the Feed and grain
would now be a small farm chemical
plant on the edge of town.
The furniture and pickle factories would still be there along with a couple of
transportation warehouses
Of course the Mayberry bank would have been rebuilt and have a branch bank with
drive up & ATM in the strip mall
There would be a couple of new/used car dealers and there would be a chain
grocery store and possibly a Wal-Mart
Most of the down town area would have been revitalized and most stores would be
there having changed names and
ownershops a new court house and jail built on a mall
Churches seldom change over the years so I would think the All Souls Church
might still be there...
Well I can't think of everything...so I'll leave the rest up to someone else....
Have a Mayberry day
Vic Friskey
Floyd's barber shop would be two chairs, "No waiting"...
