"I have always thought that the bussiest people in Mayberry were the set
builders. Every season a window or door appears or disapears, the heating system
in the court house changes, and shrubery comes and goes. The list goes on and
on.I am wondering if the portrait of a pretty woman, hanging on the Taylors
living room wall,is of Andys? late wife?Later it moves from the wall where Andy
hangs Eagle Eye Annie to the left side of the front door.????? I also wonder
what the box like structures ,at the bottom of? the court house windows?,that
appear in season 3,are? Someone called them flower boxes but they are too
narrow for that and they donot have bottoms because you can see the venition
blind cords hanging out of the bottom.????????????? Joe Layton"

I think the "box like structures" at the bottom of the windows are used to
deflect the air up toward the celing should the
window be open.  This keeps any air or breeze from blowing directly into the
room or across a desk where papers would
be blown around.  It allows for air circulation without the air being blown
directly into the room.
The ones I have seen in the past, and a long time ago, I might add, had boards
at each end with a groove where the
flat boards could be slid
in and out depending if you want to use them or not.  I have seen these boards
used like this in the past.  Matter-of-fact a
place where I worked back in the 60's had these on the windows.  We didn't have
AC back then and the windows were
often opened.  Even on a cold day, if it got hot inside, you could open the
window a little bit and use the board and help
get some cool air in and not have it blow directly on anyone.  Very usefull
back then, " in the good old days."
