Richard, the fiddle tune you're thinking of is "Barney's Hoe Down," and it was 
composed by Earle Hagen for The Show. 

>From the title, it is apparent that this tune was originally intended to be 
>Barney's theme song, but once the character began to develop it didn't work 
>out that way. The song which ended up being used as Barney's theme is called 
>"The Man Hunt." It's the march in a minor key with the melody in the 
>trombones, reminiscent of the theme from Dragnet. 

Both of these tunes are included on the album "Songs, Themes and Laughs from 
The Andy Griffith Show." The original LP is a scarce collectors' item, but a 
few years ago it became available on CD (try Weaver's).
