Every Mayberry fan remembers Gomer's wonderful rendition of Santa Lucia. When that episode first came out, nearly every viewer thought Jim Nabors' voice had been dubbed by someone else, since up to that time America had only heard his silly Gomer voice and not his natural singing voice.
Here is a version of that song by Garrison Keillor that you may also like. Santa Lucia She wasn't Swedish. She came from Italy, Dressed very prettily. Herring she didn't eat, Just pasta from whole wheat, Spaghetti and lasagna, She'd lay it on ya. She made a garlic sauce So strong your eyes'd cross! That was her panacea, Santa Lucia Santa Lucia She went to be a Cook and to clean and sew, For Swedes in Buffalo. Their name was Soderberg And all they did was work, Without hiatus And eat potatoes. They never hugged at all, They seemed on Demerol. "They had no fantasy-a," Thought Santa Lucia. Santa Lucia Had an idea: She jumped right out of bed, Put candles on her head. She brought her family Cheese ravioli And some espresso. Strong? Oh, I guess so. Those Swedes, they laughed and cried. All they had held inside. And they hugged her, Mama Mia! Santa Lucia Should anyone wish to buy this version, it is included on Garrison's excellent Christmas CD "Now It Is Christmas Again."
