That's interesting, Paul, but I never heard of that.  I grew up in the sixties 
and seventies when there were still a lot of cars with bench seats.  I never 
saw drivers slide out the passenger side, and I never heard anybody talk about 
this as a safety issue.  By the time I took driver's ed in the seventies, bench 
seats were becoming more scarce, it's true, but I don't remember that ever 
being mentioned in class.  In fact, I do recall that when I was a kid and we 
would see this being done on TV, my mom would remark how funny it was to see 
the driver slide in and out the passenger side.  She thought that was something 
that wouldn't be done in real life.  TAGS was probably one of the shows we were 
watching when she said that!
