According to Prime Time Network TV Series Book published in 1990....Dennis Weaver played the part of Deputy Chester Goode on Gunsmoke...here's a quote from the book
"Matt Dillon's loyal, well-meaning deputy was Chester Goode, who walked with a limp, talked with a twang, and brewed a mean pot of coffee---which can often be seen behind the closing credits" It didn't say but I believe Chester was injured in the war. although it could have been by some other means..
