I was watching a color episode this week and found a connection between my two passions, The Andy Griffith Show and The Beatles (or "The Beagles" as Goober called them). Paul McCartney found sheet music to a very old song with the words "Golden slumbers fill your eyes, and I will sing a lullaby." Since he didn't know how to read music (none of the Beatles did) and thereby could not play the tune, he took the words and composed his own melody around them, which is included in the medley on the Abbey Road album. Lo and behold, I was watching the Season Six episode "A Baby in the House" and during the epilogue Andy, Helen, and Aunt Bee are sitting on the front porch. Andy is playing his guitar and Helen starts singing the original version which I'd never heard before, but here it is in Mayberry, a couple of years before Paul composed his own version. Not only does it connect these two icons of the 1960s, it also gives us a chance to hear Helen sing for once on our favorite show!
