In one of the Mayberry RFD episodes there was a fund raising effort to help
raise money to get a swimming pool for the kids of Mayberry. Sam hired a
couple of ex convicts to help on the farm and they were inspired by one of
Reverend Tucker's sermons, so they took money out of Aunt Bee's cookie jar
to gamble in order to win money to give for the swimming pool. So
apparently Mayberry didn't have a pool back when Barney was in school.

Regarding "It's a Wonderful Life", which happens to be my all time favorite
movie, I always thought the swimming pool was quite advanced with that
moving floor. Being old man Potter practically owned Bedford Falls, and
being he was such a penny pincher, I often wondered where the town got the
money for that fancy pool.
