I was in the military for 34 years.     I'll tell you how far I go back, I 
used to eat C-Rations in Viet Nam.    C-Rations were packed in metal cans.

But in the late 70's and early 80's, the military introduced MRE's that are now 
standard food.     When the first set of MRE's were introduced, there were 12 
different items.    Let me tell you, some of them were inedible.    They had 
freeze dried pork and freeze dried beef.    However there were 2 that I 
considered to be quite tasty, and I always maneuvered to obtain those.    One 
was a plain slice of ham, and the other was pouch of Chicken Ala King.    Some 
of the guys did not like the Chicken Ala King, but I thought it was quite good.

I never did complain that it tasted like wall paper paste.
