Nobody ever said that Mayberry High School had a pool. Remember when Gomer was telling the story about catching a big rainbow trout at the base of Lovers' Leap Rock? He repeatedly referred to the body of water as a POOL. Perhaps this is the very "pool" where generations of Mayberry children swam.
BTW, the pool in It's a Wonderful Life with the movable gym floor over it was quite real. It was at Beverly Hills High School (where, I believe, Ronny and Clint Howard later attended) and it remained in use for decades afterward. I'm not sure if it's still in use today, though.
