I've been playing saxophone, off and on, for about the last 40 years. I
played clarinet before that, but had not picked one up in almost 50 years.
My church asked me to play on one of their Christmas pieces, but the
saxophone just didn't sound right for this piece. So I found my old
clarinet, got some minor repairs done, downloaded a fingering chart so that
I could remember where some of the notes were and started soaking my reeds.
But I still couldn't quite get the sound I wanted. Then I remembered Andy
telling one of the boys in the Mayberry band to "Andy Gump it." So I pulled
my bottom lip in more, like Andy Gump in the funny papers, and was able to
achieve more of the sound I wanted. Thanks, Andy! Now, just in case a
traveling shoe salesman ever comes through town, I need to keep the
saxophone handy and learn "Saxamania."
