Janet, My folks were from West Virginia, and my mother-in-law was from Virginia, and both ate a lot of lamb growing up.
I'm sure it's a regional thing, and since NC, VA. and WV have lots of ancestral connections, I'm not surprised that it's mentioned in the show.
