There was a program that you could set up on your system and then start it with a timer. After your period of time elapsed, the CD door would open, the machine make a belching sound and the door would close again. It was used as a joke on people who borrowed your PC. As opening and closing the CD door seems to be simple to program, I would guess that someone has done the same thing through an IRC hack, as already suggested. Clearing the screen would also, I believe, be relatively simple to do. So it does sound like a prank, and that the prankster's abilities are limited, although opening the CD drive and blanking the screen could be pretty frightening.
