I may be dating myself here... but back in the early Lotus Notes days it was
fairly simple to attach an .exe to a message and have it fire when the user
opened their mail.

We used it in the office to play sounds on the PC speakers (using a
polyphonic TSR -- remember TSR's) and to start the annoying Neko (the
animated cat that chased your cursor around the screen).

Never occurred in those days to do some of the harmful stuff that hackers
are doing these days.

Ahh... the days of innocence...
