I've been traveling the last 2 months and as a result mostly on dial-up. I run Zone Alarm on my notebook and have been amazed at the number of pings I get while on dial-up. Back in the "old" days before I had broadband and used dial-up regularly I remember rarely getting a ping (4 years ago).
I expect them when on broadband (some of the hotels I've stayed in have it - I highly recommend Wingate Inns www.wingateinns.com ) but I didn't expect to get more pings on dial-up than broadband. I got zone alarm firewall software and can't believe how many pings my home server gets -- all this time I've had the cable modem people could have been running willy nilly with my machine.
