In this case a simple layout change will do the job. You will be able to change everything on the page: content, colors, fonts, borders, size, number of columns, etc. with a simple editing. In fact there are few different levels of editing, one as administrator, another as a user. BTW, “DatabaseBrowserTest” portlet allows you to sort columns, try it and "Stock Portfolio" portlet is written as Web Service with real-time data feed from the external data source (server).
