Hi Jon,
We discussed it before and you know my opinion on this project. In my opinion (I have
arguments as well) this project is an unfortunate attempt to extend MS presence
through Linux. And I don't think the Open Source community at large will adopt it

It's a "Trojan" horse:
"Jon HawortDavid Stutz, group program manager for the shared source implementation of
Microsoft's Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) told ComputerWire: "We have talked
informally with Ximian, and will determine with Ximian whether technical assistance
would be appropriate." Ximian was unable to be contacted."

It had highly suspicious original licensing scheme (changed recently):
"The stated goal of the Mono project is to free users and developers from Microsoft's
operating system platforms, questionable business practices and restrictive licenses.
While the project sounds like a good idea on the surface, its instigators -- steeped
as they are in open source development -- have failed to recognize that its licensing
will preclude commercial developers from participating in the project or in using its
output."

It has non-resolvable (or difficult to resolve) technical issues:
"Nicholas Petreley writes at InfoWorld, "If Ximian [an open-source company behind the
Mono project, an open-source port of .Net] encourages open-source developers to write
e-commerce applications that access Passport, it actually hands Microsoft the key to
killing off open-source e-commerce once and for all."
"There are things that are part of .Net that ... would be difficult to implement on
other platforms," Stapf said. For instance, the graphical interface libraries, known
as Windows Forms, are Microsoft APIs. "The Mono guys are trying to implement the
Windows Forms, but I'm guessing that will be a hard thing for them to do."
"Now there's a thought. Any pure .Net application written under Windows will be
instantly portable to Linux. Not a bad concept for .Net application designers and
consumers alike. But what if Microsoft decides to "extend" its own .Net specification
to add undocumented calls? Well, all the third-party vendors will be stuck in that
boat as well. And they will still have the option to build a larger Linux-based
business by using Mono instead of the Windows-based implementation."

It's well behind the schedule:
"Taking advantage of the standards, Mono developers have pledged to release sometime
this year the "Mono Core," which will mimic the .Net Framework for Linux and Unix
operating systems. However, even Mono members admit that there is still much work to
be done before the first version of Mono is released."

All quotes are from the reputable sources. But the main thing here is a very simple.
At present time even MS .NET is not as good a technical solution for Web Services as
AXIS from the Open Source released last week.
Regards,
Peter Kinev.
