We (in Java world) solved this problem sometimes back. If you will be willing to 
entertain a transition from ASP to Java, please check this out from previous thread 
"Excel transformation".

"XML-to-Excel Transformation". It will display the Excel file that you will be able 
modify and store locally. But the next invocation of the same link will post unchanged 
original file.
