In addition to the META description tag mentioned earlier, you could
also add a 'Search Engine Only' type of description directly after
the BODY tag for those engines that ignore META tags. It would only
be seen by search engines and spiders and would be invisible in
most browsers - not even showing up in a 'View Source'.
To do this, you need to be able to use Extended SSI calls (probably
only available on *nix boxes running Apache.) Just add this code
immediately after the BODY tag on your pages:
<!--# if expr="\"$HTTP_USER_AGENT\" != /Mozilla|MSIE|Opera|Lynx|WebTV|NCSA
Mosaic/" -->
<p>This Description is Seen Only By Search Engines and Spiders - change
to whatever description applies to the page.</p>
<!--#endif -->
Your pages will, most likely, need to have the .shtml extension (check
with your host.)
