It depends which direction you'd like to go in, I suppose.

XML is a back-end technology, useful for storing, transferring and analysing
data. Javascript is a front-end technology, useful for building funky user
interfaces.

Do you see yourself more as a server person or a UI person? 

I'd go for XML personally, but that's mainly because it would be most
beneficial to me in achieving my future goals. I also see it as a more
"useful" technology - there are many more applications for XML than there
are for Javascript.
