I looked in IE6 and Mozilla (which is the same codebase as NN7, I think, or
close enough).

Try fiddling with the text-decoration styles for images that are links -
when you hover over the images, Moz underlines them, and the gap may be
caused by it reserving space to render the underline.

Setting padding to 0 for images may also be effective.
