Tim adds: I've seen a lot of HP machines (Kayaks in particular) come with only a single IDE port on the MB, because they've got built-in SCSI and expect it to be used for the storage hardware. I've often wondered if whatever chip they use for the IDE really supports 2 channels and they just disable one. :-) FWIW, I've got a Promise card in my home machine, too...it cost about $75 new and lets me do RAID0/1/0+1. I run four Western Digital 120GB drives on it (got a really good deal at Best Buy a while back), giving me 240GB of RAID0+1. If nothing else, it's reduced the HD speed bottleneck quite dramatically - in most heavy I/O apps, my 400MHz PII runs every bit as fast as my 2GHz P4 at work. It was one of those situations where I was balancing upgrading the MB/processor vs. the HDDs, and unlike most of my friends went with the HDD upgrade. Haven't been sorry for it...the 400 is still fast enough for me with this setup.
