Thanks for the info, I couldn't imagine how or why it was
happening, and usually with most "sticky" pages, if I hit
the back button 2 times, it backs me up. But yesterday,
I was hitting that button 3, 4, and 5 times and it wouldn't
work. Well, it caught me in a stressed mood, and I sent
an email to the webmaster letting him/her know how angry
I was. I think it's a violation of surfer's rights but
that's only my opinion.

I agree, it's very annoying. I wonder how many people just close the
browser and start all over.

However, it's not that hard to circumvent once you realize it's happening.
Usually, it's done with a META REFRESH or a bit of javascript in a page that
takes you to the page that's "sticky." In other words, there's a page whose
sole purpose is to send you to the page you're stuck on. So, when you go
back one page, you hit that page and get sent forward, to the page you were
on before you hit the back button.

To circumvent this in IE and Netscape (7+ anyway, I think 4.x has it too),
just click on the small down arrow next to the back button. That displays
a drop-down list of previous pages visited. Just select the second entry in
the list and you should be back where you were before you got stuck.

HTH,
Greg

Subject: [wdvltalk] [OT] programming "sticky" pages

Hi list, I was surfing the other day, and when I reached a page, I was reviewing it, but when I tried to use the "back" button, I couldn't get my browser to go back. I'm assuming there was some kind of "sticky" programming code on the page. I was using NN 7.0.

I don't know how anyone on this list feels about web developers that use
specific coding to prevent visitors from using the back button, and forcing
them to stay on their client's page.

Sure, in NN I can use the file menu "go" to skip back to the previous page,
or to my home page, but I definitely believe that it's a lousy web developer
tactic.

The experience of not being able to go "back" made me angry, and I'm a web
developer. Just think how angry other visitors/surfers might get.

Ok, finished, that's my rant for today.
