.NET is actually an open standard and not MS proprietary. You can currently
get .NET framework to run on Apache and also on Linux as well as FreeBSD and
a port to Mac OS X. See www.go-mono.com for Linux version.

Why would this be surprising? NET is proprietary. Simple up front, dependent
upon MS' implementation of standards behind the scenes.  And undoubtedly
with all the security of "safe computing" built-in. It's just "save as web
page" in the form of "save as web app". The web, the MS way.
