Peter,
Does PS5 have the magnetic lasso? If so, that tool could make your job
rather simple. Draw around the outline of the group and the magnetic lasso
should snap to the shape fairly closely. You may have to touch it up some if
the background has similar colors to your subjects. Once you have the
outline selected, create a new layer and fill the selected area with black.
Deselect all and fill the background (base layer) with white. Is this the
effect you're after?
