Both NT4 and Win2k will boot from CD, but you may need to change the boot
order in the CMOS setup (if the PC is set up to boot from the hard drive
first, you'll usually just get a message along the lines of "Operating
System not found").

If you've got a second machine hanging around, try sticking your new hd in
there as a slave and see if it's recognised.
