Dear Group: Have a desktop machine that has "died" and would like to attempt to diagnose the general problem so I can determine which component is the problem. I have intermediate skills with hardware - meaning I have built a couple of computers and have a basic knowledge of "plug this here and that there" and loading all the goodies. Now that it is seemingly "dead" I do not know how to begin figurinng out whether or not I can still use it with a minor repair or if I will be able to cannabalize it for parts or whatever.
It acts like this - I power up and I hear the hard drive, but I get no nothing on the monitor - (monitor is fine btw) - that' it! I have to unplug to power down - the power button will not do the trick. I can't even access setup during the boot process! The machine is a 750mhz amd with a 20g 7200rpm hard drive (seagate? maxtor? I'll look that up on the old paperwork) with 128 mb ram. Worked great til a few weeks ago and it started acting strange and seemed to die then. After having it unplugged for a couple of weeks whilst I was transitioning to a new desk, it worked for one day perfectly and then the situation I described above. Not looking for someone to tell me how to fix it, but how to start the diagnostic process. Thanks ever so much! bbw faithful group lurker... ____ The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM ____ To Join wdvltalk, Send An Email To: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Send Your Posts To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To set a personal password send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the words: "set WDVLTALK pw=yourpassword" in the body of the email.
