Well I am so embarrassed. As this is the first time I have used JavaScript like this I immediately jumped to the conclusion that JS (and my lack of experience) was the problem. I had forgotten that I had turned off the *background print* option in IE. So thanks to all of you who responded to my question. Next time I will try to do more trouble shooting on my own before I bother the group with a question.
