<conspiracy_theory>I think it is because Norton and McAfee house sweatshops of virus creators in the dungeons of corporateville creating these nasty little boogers. It would seem logical to me that a company responsible for creating anti-virus software needs to have viruses to exist and some means to fan the flames at the paranoid mass (aka customers!).</conspiracy_theory>
When I discovered that the company who created Radar to target speeders is also the same company who creates radar detectors, it only made sense that the same model would apply to the Anti-Virus companies.
