Hi Elisa,

Sorry it has taken me this long to respond. All my email accounts were
down for two days thanks to Earthlink. Nothing like dependability.

I really don't have any special software to create the print materials
other than Photoshop and Fireworks (Illustrator is on my Christmas
list). The last time I designed a t-shirt I did it for a local
politician who used a nearby printing company. When he told me who he
was using, I called the printing company and asked what kind of file
they needed, the dimensions and the DPI (very important). Then I
created it according to their technical specs and emailed it to them.

With the postcards, I point people to http://www.4over4.com . They are
well priced and print high quality. If you go to the site, you will
notice that they have templates for all their products. Once I finish a
site for my clients, I ask them if they want me to design a postcard to
advertise their new webpage.

Designing for print is very easy to do once you have the dimensions. I
do not print anything myself. There are so many companies that do it
cheaply, it is unnecessary to reinvent the wheel.

For the screensaver, I used a junky freeware program that I promptly
deleted after the project was over.

BTW, for a knock around project (when I was bored one Saturday) I made
these nutty t-shirts:

Buy one and you will be my friend for ever! :)

Hope my rambling helped,

Will Stewart

Dear Will and Dave,

Great posts on diversification! Thanks very much.

Will, love the idea of offering to create print material to supplement
the web page. What kind of computer material and software do you use
for this? It sounds like you've got quite the setup to be able to do
business cards, postcards, t-shirts (!!!), etc...wow!

I certainly would not be able to offer all of the things you've
mentioned, however, I think I might be able to do a few of them - it
would be wonderful to offer that to my clients!

Thanks again for the fantastic ideas!

Sincerely,

Elisa Butler

cwc> Hi Dave,

cwc> I wanted to thank you for all the posts you submitted on the
subject of
cwc> how to successfully run an internet business. They have been very
cwc> helpful for me and, I'm sure, for others as well.

cwc> Though many of the practices you mention in previous messages I do
not
cwc> do (yet), I have learned to diversified my business with great
success.
cwc> Once you do a webpage for a client, if the experience was good for
them,
cwc> they trust you. Creating print material that supplements the
webpage is
cwc> the perfect opportunity to increase your business. Though I do
webpages
cwc> primarily, I have done billboards, business cards, logos,
postcards,
cwc> t-shirts, booklets, pamphlets, banners, presentation boards,
desktop
cwc> images and screensavers! Though it was a little daunting at first
cwc> getting into print, my experience has been great.

cwc> You mentioned ways to diversify and snag a client who you would
normally
cwc> miss. One group that I find lucrative is politicians. Every X
years
cwc> they do what amounts to a massive advertisement campaign that
includes
cwc> webpages, billboards, cards they handout and more. If you get the
cwc> complete contract for a candidate running for office, you can turn
a
cwc> pretty penny. In addition, politics is a networking game and if
your
cwc> client appreciated your work (and he wins his office) you will find
more
cwc> work coming your way from his buddies.

cwc> Just wanted to put in my 2 cents. Keep up the messages, Dave!

cwc> HTH,
cwc> Will
