I'm with you. I can't remember the last time I voluntarily maximized my
browser window. I say voluntarily because on occasion I've visited sites
that insisted on going full screen and it really annoys me.
 
Even though my husband does maximize his browser window he always has his
favorites or history bar open. As a result I can always tell when he's "done
a quick check on your computer", drives me nuts.

if you make the assumption that users are perfectly happy to maximize their
browser windows to avoid scrolling horizontally on your site, then yeah, go
right ahead, make them maximize their browser windows
