The boards I've seen with NIC built-in and few slots all had USB ports.
Assuming you could disable onboard NIC get an external USB NIC adapter. I've
used them in laptops that had no built-in NIC quite successfully. Got tired
of loosing the "dongles" for the PCMCIA ones and on laptops with only one
slot being able to plug into a USB hub at the desk with externals all
connected to the hub was a godsend.

Since I no longer own a desktop I have a USB 2 hub with my keyboard, 120gig
hard drive, Pocket PC cradle, etc. connected which I use at my desk. I use
802.11g to connect to my network otherwise I'd probably have a USB NIC on it
as well. (My tablet has a docking station that has all of that stuff built
into including an extra video port but I still plug my USB hub into the port
replicator to make it easier to move between machines.)

Umm, unless, as in the case with one of my desktops, the NIC is built into
the motherboard. Of course, in that case, it is (should be) possible to
disable the onboard NIC and install a card, assuming that there is an open
slot. I have seen MBs with only a few slots, all of which are already in
use, which would preclude that solution, however. In such a case you have
two options: replace the MB or eschew network access.
