I don't think it's a list-wide thing.  It only affects those of us who
group messages by subject.  In Outlook in OE, I think they call it
"conversations" but it's the same idea.  It gives you an expandable
tree widget or some such, with all messages that are in response to
the same subject grouped under one heading that can be collapsed to
conserve space or organize things....  but, when you change the
subject line, it creates a new header (thread) for a reply to a
conversation that already exists.
