Hi Deb,

Sounds good so far, got any spare network ports on the back of the router?
Yes. Well, I think they're called ports - you know what the end of a cable modem cable looks like, a large phone jack? I have like 4 of them you can plug that kind of cable into on the back of the router. I think they'd be called the "female" end is what those on the back of the router would be.

Is this a wired network card (with a socket for a cable) or a wireless card?
Wireless pcmia card.
> When you say "turn on the access point only when I > need it" - how do I do that?
It's got a power switch, right? ;-)
No, it doesn't. I can't just turn the router off, I have to manually disconnect the cable from it if I don't want it to be in working order. If I have to manually unplug cables each time I'm not going to bother with that. It's to much trouble to get at these cables on any kind of regular basis.

If "it" is the modem, then that means its getting its own IP address from your ISP (which is perfectly normal) - there should also be a section in the configuration pages called "DHCP" which is where you need to look.
Don't worry about this, it's not that important and I'm probably confusing
Yeah, confusing so I'm going to skip this part.
you :-)

Do you connect to the Internet via a dial-up connection on your PC? If so you're definitely not, and you can completely forget about the DHCP stuff :-)
No, I normally connect via cable modem UNLESS cable is down - then I have a backup dialup connection - NetZero for this type of "emergency" online work.
Any chance you can post the manufacturers' names and model numbers for your modem and router (and any other networking bits you have)?
I have the answer I was looking for in this thread which had to originally do with wanting to know if I needed an anti-virus program on both computers that are networked together. So, all the answers above are probably of no value at this point. I'm going to be moving on now to try to figure out how to enable WEP and then to hopefully - getting these two computers set so that I can share files between them and share my one printer between them.
Thanks, Jon! Deb
