I agree on Flash sites especially when the Flash serves no apparent purpose. My husband and I will be attending a conference at the Omni Resort in Brumfield, Colorado. Which happens to have a golf course as one of the amenities. My youngest son has expressed an interest in learning to play golf (one of his closest friends plays) so I after talking to the concierge she sent me a link to the http://www.ricksmithgolf.com/home.html which embodies everything I hate about many Flash sites.
The page is slow to load even on my 1.7mps broadband. Hate to try and access it on dial-up. I can't bookmark any of the individual pages and to top it off they use the same rotating images on each page so it doesn't even add anything to the user experience. Which forces the actual content unique to each page into a small window to the right of the constantly changing image. Makes it very distracting to try and read the text you have to scroll through since there isn't room enough to read it without scrolling. Not to mention that when you go to the site it maximizes your browser window. Something I really, really hate. Besides when I did get to the Junior Summer Camp page there was no pricing or dates. Only a mention that family members could attend the end of camp barbeque for an additional 15 each. The concierge found out for me that there was not a camp available during the time we would be there. If you do resize the browser window back down like I did and accidentally click the back button out of habit (forgetting that it is Flash so that doesn't take you back to the last page you were viewing) you screen jumps back up to full size. If its use is gratuitous, contributing nothing to the site, or it is not seriously compelling, I'm as likely as not to click away and probably never return. Quick, small text-effects stuff that gets right on into the site and doesn't get in the way doesn't bother me. Stuff that takes 10-20 seconds to load and that long or longer to play... I'm outa there unless they've got content I absolutely have to have. ____ The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM ____ To Join wdvltalk, Send An Email To: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Send Your Posts To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To set a personal password send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the words: "set WDVLTALK pw=yourpassword" in the body of the email.
