select don't take input.  period.  I'd love to see an example of what
you're talking about.

You can see many examples of this in many applications, but none of them is Web- (ie, browser-) based. Unfortunately, there is no way of reproducing some of the commonplace techniques of application programming within Web browsers, so that's just life.


It occurs to me that, if one of the options was 'new', then JavaScript could be used to replace the select element with an input element, if the positioning and style could be made the same, but this seems a lot of work when we're all used to having both in our pages.
